Three years after its release, Microsoft has
stopped providing support for the original Surface Duo. OS and security
upgrades will no longer be applied to the device.
Due to the original Surface Duo's three-year window for obtaining security and operating system upgrades for
Android having passed on September
10, 2023, Microsoft has discontinued support for the device.
The
Surface Duo had a difficult lifecycle, experiencing delays in software upgrades
and battling for consumer market success.
Despite
these drawbacks, homebrew software developers who tried to run beta versions of
Android and Windows on the Surface Duo gave it a cult following.

The Surface Duo and Surface Neo
were first unveiled by Microsoft in October 2019, and while the latter gadget

This original Surface Duo's end of

retail price because the hardware was not successful in the consumer market.
The Surface Duo has developed
something of a cult following within the community of independent software
developers over the last few years. An unannounced version of Windows 10X,
Android 13, and Windows 11 have all been tried to run on the device by
dedicated developers.
The Surface Duo 2, which succeeded
the first Surface Duo and is a significant advance over it, has nevertheless
received what could be considered a muted response. Currently, the latter
device will continue to receive both OS and security upgrades through October
while the former will no longer receive either.
21, 2024. Microsoft has not
officially confirmed any details, but the next version of the Surface Duo is
believed to do away with the hinge design in favor of a "true"
